LOSS OF THE SULTANA - REMINISCENCES OF SURVIVORS
J. L. SLICK
I WAS born in Monroe county, Michigan, 1844, and enlisted in the service of the
United States at Detroit, February 22, 1864, in Company A, 18th Regiment
Michigan Infantry, and was captured at Athens, September 24, 1864, and confined
in the Cahaba, Ala., prison.
When the explosion occurred I was thrown against the wheel house and knocked
insensible. When I came to I helped a comrade on a board six inches wide and
four feet long, and as he was no swimmer I took charge of the craft. We landed
on a log at seven o'clock A. M., and while there I drew a comrade out of the
water who had his leg scalded so badly that the flesh dropped off.
Occupation, merchant. Postoffice address Lambertville, Mich.
